Fruit science:

Pomology is mainly focused on the development, enhancement, cultivation and physiological studies of fruit trees. The goals of fruit tree improvement include enhancement of fruit quality, regulation of production periods, and reduction of production cost. One involved in the science of pomology is called a Pomologist.

Vegetable sciences:

Vegetable Science is a specialized branch of horticulture that studies all the aspects of vegetable production, including growth regulation, pest management, sustainable production, harvesting, handling, storage, shipping, and final consumption. The department is pioneer in contributing the improved technology for cultivation of vegetables under protected cultivation, organic farming and major off-season vegetable crops.

Floriculture and Landscape Architecture:

The flower has acquired an unique position in our lives. Floriculture deals with growing or cultivation (large scale) of beautiful flowering plants. It is a branch of horticulture which deals with flower cultivation on a commercial scale, its marketing and selling. If taken on broad perspective, it includes even flower arrangement, designs, cuts, and arranges live, dried, or artificial flowers and foliage.

Spices, Plantation, Medicinal & Aromatic crops:

The department mainly deals with the production aspects of spice, plantation, medicinal and aromatic crops. Medicinal & Aromatic Plants (MAPs) are botanical raw materials, also known as herbal drugs that are primarily used for therapeutic, aromatic and or culinary purposes as components of cosmetics, medicinal products, health foods and other natural health product.

Post-harvest Technology:

Post harvest technology is inter-disciplinary "Science and Technique" applied to agricultural produce after harvest for its protection, conservation, processing, packaging, distribution, marketing, and utilization to meet the food and nutritional requirements of the people in relation to their needs. It has to develop in consonance with the needs of each society to stimulate agricultural production; prevent post-harvest losses, improve nutrition and add value to the products.


The Department is engaged in imparting education in the field of applied Entomology and Nematology at graduate levels. It is playing an important role in the development of human resources for scientifically managing various insect and non-insect pest problems and apiculture. The department is also engaged in developing management practices for insects and nematode pests of fruits, vegetables and ornamental crops.

Plant Pathology:

The department mainly focuses on the plant health management of fruit, vegetable and flower crops by focusing on important fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens and their management.To develop diagnosis and management practices for diseases of fruits, vegetables and ornamentals and to periodically review and refine existing recommendations by the new and cost effective alternatives.And mushrooms for enhancing their production and find new strains giving higher yield and of medicinal value.

Genetics and Plant Breeding:

Genetics is a branch of biology concerned with the study of genes, genetic variation, and heredity in organisms. Plant breeding uses principles from a variety of sciences to improve the genetic potential of plants. The process involves combining parental plants to obtain the next generation with the best characteristics. Breeders improve plants by selecting those with the greatest potential based on performance data, pedigree, and more sophisticated genetic information. Plants are improved for food, feed, fiber, fuel, shelter, landscaping, eco- systems services and a variety of other human activities.

Agronomy and Soil Science:

Agronomy is the science and technology of producing and using plants in agriculture for food, fuel, fibre, and land restoration. It is both a humanitarian career and a scientific one. Agronomy has come to encompass work in the areas of plant genetics, plant physiology, meteorology, and soil science. Soil science is the study of soil as a natural resource on the surface of the Earth including soil formation, classification and mapping; physical, chemical, biological, and fertility properties of soils; and these properties in relation to the use and management of soils.

Plant Physiology, Biochemistry & Microbiology:

Plant physiology is a sub discipline of botany concerned with the functioning or physiology of plants. Biochemistry, sometimes called biological chemistry, is the study of chemical processes within and relating to living organisms. Biochemical processes give rise to the complexity of life. Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi and protozoa. This discipline includes fundamental research on the biochemistry, physiology, cell biology, ecology, evolution and clinical aspects of microorganisms, including the host response to these agents.

English, Statistics & Social Sciences:

The department includes subjects of Statistics, English and Social Science like Economics and Extension. Statistics is the discipline that concerns the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data. In applying statistics to a scientific, industrial, or social problem, it is conventional to begin with a statistical population or a statistical model to be studied. Extension Education is an applied social science consisting of relevant content derived from physical, biological and social sciences and in its own process synthesised into a body of knowledge, concepts, principles and procedures oriented to provide non-credit out
of school education largely for adults.

Horticultural Engineering and Environmental Science:

Horticultural Engineering is the engineering of agricultural production and processing. Horticultural engineering combines the disciplines of mechanical civil, electrical, food science and chemical engineering principles with a knowledge of horticultural principles according to technological principles.

Animal Husbandry:

The department of Animal Husbandry deals with controlled cultivation, management, and production of domestic animals, including improvement of the qualities considered desirable by humans by means of breeding.
